What are Artifacts?

An artifact is “an object (as a tool or an ornament) showing human workmanship and modification as distinguished from a natural object.” The Oxford English Dictionary defines an artifact (artefact) as “anything made by human art and workmanship.” Artists are makers at heart. I work with various metals to make sculpture, jewelry, and, well, things that just occur to me. The artistry in creating a hand-made spoon, a candlestick, or a tea set is no less than sculpture. Sometimes what we create ends up being useful; oftentimes, the use of an artistic piece is to share a vision, a concept, or a dream. Vincent Van Gogh stated it nicely, “I dream my paintings and I paint my dream.”
